A Maltese architecture firm’s vision for Malta’s buses, which would convert them into electric vehicles with a design based on the traditional fleet, has been nominated for an EU prize.

Mizzi Studio’s Malta Bus Reborn project was nominated for a New European Bauhaus prize, which rewards beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive real-life projects.

“As a studio, it is an honour to have The Malta Bus Reborn nominated alongside other esteemed European projects,” Mizzi Studio director Jonathan Mizzi said.

“Our commitment extends beyond design; it is about crafting a harmonious living future while preserving our collective memory and cultural heritage.”

“We embrace the journey ahead with enthusiasm, and we are eager to contribute to a future where innovation and heritage align seamlessly whilst tackling the climate crisis.”

Malta Bus Reform has been nominated in the ‘Regaining a Sense of Belonging’ category, along with other projects from Portugal, Finland, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia, the Netherlands, Czechia, Slovenia, and Bulgaria.

People can vote for their favourite projects online, and the results will be announced on 12th April.

Mizzi’s Malta Bus Reborn design, which includes digital tberfil (decorative hand-painting), a stunning rear, and lots of design details that pay homage to the past, was first revealed in April 2019 by Lovin Tomorrow, a one-off newspaper published by Lovin Malta to mark April Fools.

The concept was formally launched by Mizzi and then-Transport Minister Ian Borg in October 2019.

Although the government displayed enthusiasm about the project, there has been no visible progress since then. However, Mizzi remains optimistic that his design will one day become a reality.
