Watch: ‘Are You Serious?’ – PN MP Not Impressed By Abela Blaming Power Cuts On Electric Cars
Shadow Energy Minister Ryan Callus accused Robert Abela of adopting a “defeatist” mindset after the Prime Minister partially blamed electric cars for Malta’s summer power cuts.
“First he encourages everyone to buy an electric car, even though I believe the solution lies in mass transport, and then he warns they pose a challenge to the electricity grid,” Callus said during a debate on Xtra with Energy Minister Miriam Dalli.
“Are you serious?” Callus asked.

As part of the European Green Deal, no new petrol and diesel cars can be sold in Malta and other EU member states by 2035. The government’ official target is to have 65,000 electric or hybrid vehicles on the road by 2030, there are currently just under 30,000.
Callus didn’t question these controversial EU targets but said the government has known about them for a while and should have planned the nation’s infrastructure in advance to ensure it can cope with the increased demand.
“Instead, the Prime Minister has come up with this defeatist reaction. He has practically given up and just tossed his towel on the beach. The government is tired and is out of touch with people’s needs.”
