Argument Over Overcrowding In Nine-Person Apartment In Birkirkara Lands Man Suspended Sentence
An argument over overcrowding in a nine-person apartment ended with a man being found guilty of domestic violence against one of his roommates.
The man, a 28-year-old Indian national who lives in Birkirkara, allegedly assaulted one of his roommates after discovering that three more people were brought in to live in the apartment, on top of the six people, including himself, who already resided there.
However, he told the court that two of his original roommates had started the fight after he insisted that three new arrivals must leave since the property was far too small.
He said that they insulted him and grabbed him by the neck, forcing him to attack them with a keychain.
The man pleaded guilty to the charges and cooperated with the police following his arrest.
Magistrate Josette Demicoli handed down the man a suspended sentence, taking into account his clean record. He has also been ordered to not speak to the victim for the next two years, forcing him to seek alternative accommodation.
