Arm Police With Tasers And Pepper Spray To Combat Street Crime, Adrian Delia Urges
Police need more weapons – including tasers and pepper spray – to combat crime in the streets, Nationalist MP Adrian Delia said.
As he decried the “ghettoisation” of certain parts of Malta during a discussion of NET FM today, Delia cast an eye on the state of the police force.
“We need more police officers and they need to be better armed,” he said. “It doesn’t mean we want them to shoot people but they need to have the proper gear, including pepper spray and tasers, like they do in other countries. They have nothing right now.”
He linked the argument to the overpopulation of Malta and the government’s failure to invest in the police force, highlighting closed and dilapidated police offices and stations, poor pay and conditions of police officers and scarce training.
“This has got nothing to do with migrants. At a football stadium, there needs to be enough security to deal with the crowds and they need to be properly equipped and trained.”
After Prime Minister Robert Abela accused the Opposition of “sensationalism” after two of its MPs called for the immediate deportation of foreign criminals, Delia hit back and warned the government has failed to keep Malta safe.
“Not one has the government failed but it has now dropped its weapons and given up,” he said. “One can fail but learn your lesson and emerge from the problem but this government has failed and given up.”
“Rather than realising that there is an acute problem that must be solved, he is firing at the Opposition – just like [Transport Minister] Aaron Farrugia blaming village feasts for traffic.”
