Around 2,000 Maltese Policemen To Benefit From Newly Signed Sectoral Agreement

Around 2,000 members from Malta’s Police Force are set to benefit from better wages and conditions due to a newly-signed sectoral agreement.
The agreement was signed earlier today between the government and representatives for workers within the police force, in the presence of Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana.
The sectoral agreement will mean increases in wages and allowances, as well as other benefits such as enhanced career progress. The agreement also acknowledges that police officers face unpredictable scenarios, and therefore, officials will be covered by legal protection related to their duties.
The government stressed that this agreement signifies the “government’s commitment to invest in the human resources of a crucial pillar in our country’s security, especially at the heart of Maltese and Gozitan communities”.
During discussions with police officials, Prime Minister Robert Abela spoke about the officers’ service and the importance of continuous training, highlighting that the government aims to continue providing support through continuous investment in the police force to maintain order and peace in the community.
Representatives of the workers through the two unions, namely the Police Officers Union within the General Workers’ Union and the Malta Police Union, expressed satisfaction with the sectoral agreement that was signed after the previous one expired and praised the ongoing dialogue and respect shown during the negotiation of the new agreement.
The POU-GWU hailed the agreement as a positive one, as it recognises the Police Force as a crucial pillar for maintaining law and order and builds on their achievements by improving the salaries and conditions for all officials.
On the other hand, the MPU stated that this is an agreement that certainly strengthens current conditions and provides a solid basis for the future.
