The Island Sanctuary, a popular animal shelter, welcomed Austin Borg’s remaining dogs, who can now enjoy a forever home after having lost their lifelong companion.

“Introducing our latest admissions,” they wrote on Facebook. “Katrika, Fleur and Glory, who came to the Island Sanctuary from Austin, who sadly lost his battle.”

“We were happy to have helped you by caring for your dogs. Some months ago, he had asked us for aid. It was then we welcomed the first twelve dogs. A fortnight ago, we adopted the last three.”

Speaking with Lovin Malta, a spokesperson from the sanctuary were more than happy to welcome the dogs into their family, even amid the difficulties they faced after losing their lifelong companion.

“Austin loved them, though they were not used to being around other people.”

Many remember Austin for having given up electricity to continue to afford to feed his 80 dogs and cats in his Birkirkara home. His story went public through Xarabank, in 2011.

His efforts were well known among Malta’s community of animal activists, for keeping strays off the streets by adopting more animals.

After his passing, the Island Sanctuary appealed for donations to help them continue saving dogs’ lives, and in doing so, ensure Austin’s legacy lives on.

The sanctuary has now publicly thanked all persons who have made – and continue to make – donations in his honour.

“We are overwhelmed by your response,” they wrote. “And we appreciate your help.”

Those interested can send a donation to the organisation through BOV mobile (79018901) or Revolut (79048680).
