A balcony above the pavement along a busy Gżira has collapsed as rains and wind hit the island today.

Footage sent to Lovin Malta shows the balcony, which belongs to Alfa Stationary on Triq ix-Xatt, shows debris from the balcony strewn across the pavement. Some parts of the balcony hang off the first floor.

“Thank God no one was walking under the balcony when it collapsed as people are always walking or jogging there,” one Gżira business owner told Lovin Malta.

“We heard a loud bang and thought something had happened next door because there are works being carried out on the building. We went out to see what happened and initially thought someone had fallen from an upper floor onto the scaffolding – but then we saw that the balcony had collapsed.”

Business owners had reported the vulnerable balcony to the Gżira local council back in December, 2021, and were told that the Sliema police would be notified. However, come September, 2022, and not much seems to have been done.

“We had been told by someone who works on this street that we should never stand under the balcony because from their offices they could see a big crack that ran from one side of the balcony to the other. They said it looked like it was only the railing that was holding it up,” they said.

Police are currently on scene following the collapse.
