Battle Of The Għadira Deckchairs: Konrad Mizzi Blasts PN MP’s ‘Shameful’ Concession Days Before 2013 Election
Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and MP Jason Azzopardi have become embroiled in a war of words over beach operators at Għadira Bay. Mizzi is claiming that the MP, who back then was Parliamentary Secretary for Lands, provided a wide concession to umbrella and deckchair operators just eight days before the 2013 general election.
“We investigated and discovered that in 2013, eight days before the election, former minister Jason Azzopardi gave a shameful concession to operators who could install as many umbrellas and deckchairs as they want on the country’s largest beach for 15 years,” Mizzi alleged on Facebook.
While failing to deny the claim, Azzopardi turned the tables onto the Labour Government, which he said was simply looking for someone to blame [once again] after failing to tackle the problem themselves.
“As expected, the Labour Party, with its predictable collusion of third parties, thinks it can intimidate me by continuing to lie about me. And from who else but the corrupt liar Konrad Mizzi.”
Referencing articles from several media outlets, including One News, Azzopardi said that he, along with Mario de Marco and other ministers, took action following “justified” complaints from the government.
Azzopardi said that the PN government had introduced more stringent regulations, namely that every operator could not pass a specific limit of deckchairs, regulations for the distance between operators, and made obligations to upgrade and upkeep the area, to not ocuppy the bay from the morning, and to leave space for the public.
