BCA Employees Forced To Leave Their Offices After Roof Debris Fell

A number of employees at the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) were forced to leave their desks as pieces of ceiling debris fell.

This incident happened November 2022.

Among those affected was Carmel Pace, the widower of Miriam Pace, who had lost her life in a tragic house collapse in Santa Venera back in 2020. Workers arrived to the BCA offices, only to discover debris scattered all over the floor, according to Times Of Malta.

Notably, the debris wasn’t just limited to the office spaces; cement pieces had crashed onto the corridors, staircases, and even some desks, revealing the steel reinforcing mesh of the ceiling. The building, which stands at Hornworks ditch in Floriana, had reportedly been in a decrepit state for years, even being deemed unsafe structurally by numerous sources. As stated by an employee, the situation could have been devastating if the debris had fallen during working hours, with some pieces being potentially fatal.

Keeping safety in mind, the affected areas were immediately sealed off, and the staff were temporarily relocated to halls in an alternate building.

In light of Karl Azzopardi, a former CEO, who recently testified in the Jean Paul Sofia public inquiry. claiming that the BCA lacked funding and manpower.
