BCRS Hit An Insane 100 Million Bottle Milestone In Just Over Seven Months

Lesson learned: Give people money, and they will recycle…
BCRS just hit a major milestone with consumers successfully recycling 100 million bottles in just over seven months!!
“The collaborative spirit which brought the business community, government and the public together has enabled the success of this scheme, which ultimately benefits the Maltese environment,” a BCRS Malta spokesperson said.

Malta is the first country in the Mediterranean to introduce such a deposit return scheme.
And today, the 100-millionth container was recycled, making the initiative a super success.
“Since January, the collection rate has steadily remained at around 74 per cent. We are pleased to see that the majority of people have embraced this new practice of recycling,” the spokesperson continued.
BCRS Malta is making impressive progress in achieving its goal of recycling 70% of the beverage containers released into the market by the end of 2023.
Currently, the daily collection has reached an impressive number of nearly 675,000 containers.
BCRS will be rolling out more large-scale reverse vending machines depots for beverage containers, a few are already up, in places like Pembroke’s Park and Ride and the Marsa Industrial Park.
These large scale hubs, soon ten in total, allow consumers to deposit their plastic bottles all at once.
And more initiatives shall be expected!
“Recovering 100 million containers is a major achievement and we look forward to building on this milestone and seeing these numbers increase in the future,” the spokesperson concluded.
