‘Once There Were Trees’: Before And After Shots Of Luqa Road Widening Project

Two videos captured months apart show the sheer lack of greenery that was brought on due to the ongoing road widening project in Luqa.

Uploaded by independent politician Arnold Cassola, the two videos depict the before and after of Triq il-Kunsill tal-Ewropa in Luqa.

“The ‘getting things done’ mentality runs roughshod over the mental and physical well-being of residents,” Cassola told Lovin Malta.

“The constant daily gridlocks on our roads are living proof of the fact that road widening only serves two purposes: inducing more car use and fattening somebody’s pockets with the commissions on 700 million,” he said.

The project was at the centre of controversy a few months back, when excavation works in the said area had begun while an appeal was still ongoing.

While a Planning Authority permit had been granted, multiple landowners had appealed the decision. Regardless, works had begun regardless of the permit being under appeal.

Malta has been undergoing some serious changes in the name of progress, with the island’s environment and greenery often taking the punch.

A few days back, similar photographs were revealed of the quaint town of Sannat, showing the take-up of green spaces in just seven years.

What do you make of these before and after?
