Malta’s first road fatality of 2023  has been identified as Pawlu D’Amato, aka Pawlu iċ-Ċeċe, a beloved horse trainer from Marsa who lost his life after being struck by a car last night.

D’Amato, who celebrated his 79th birthday just days ago, is being remembered fondly by all those who worked with and knew him, with some even lovingly referring to him as the “king of Marsa”.

The Malta Racing Club remembered D’Amato as someone always up for a laugh and ready for a joke any time, as well as his last major win, with the horse Black Guy back in 2012 – though anyone who knew him will likely remember one of his favourite horses, Kymris.

Anton Rea Cutajar shared photos of the man during better times in his life, calling on the Malta Racing Club to fly their flag at half mast in tribute to D’Amato.

D’Amato was certified dead shortly after being struck by a Kia Sorento being driven by a 24-year-old man from Birżebbuġa at around 7pm last night in the Marsa-Ħamrun Bypass.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and took the man for further medical treatment at Mater Dei hospital; however, he was certified dead by medical professionals soon after.

He is the first person to lose his life on Malta’s roads in 2023.
