Bernard Grech Changes Tone On Manoel Island Project

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has changed his tone on the Manoel Island project and is now openly calling on the government to analyse whether any conditions in MIDI’s concession were breached.
Grech had initially taken a diplomatic stance, telling The Times that while the idea of turning Manoel Island into a national park was a “beautiful dream”, the contract must be honoured for the sake of the rule of law.
While he called on the government to analyse the contract and left the door open to negotiations, he said the contract must be honoured by both parties.
However, after several PN MPs came out in favour of turning the island into a national park, Grech shifted his tone on the project.
“This week, some people twisted my comments on Manoel Island to suit them,” he said.
“I reiterate that the idea to turn Manoel Island into a national park is a beautiful idea but as it stands, there is a contract where both parties have obligations.”
“I call on the government to be transparent and find out whether any conditions were broken.”
“Unless the contract is scrapped by agreement or a court decision, the concession remains valid and any unilateral action to stop it will expose that side to damages.”
“I remind everyone that the country spent €400 million for nothing in the Vitals-Steward case. We are therefore all obliged to see what the 29,000 who signed the petition are saying.”
