Bernard Grech Condemns Arrest Of Mosta Tree Protestor: ‘Malta Deserves Much Better’
Opposition Leader Bernard Grech criticised the arrest of Moviment Graffitti Andre Callus during a protest against the felling of 12 ficus trees in Mosta.
“I wholeheartedly condemn the police commissioner’s orders to arrest protestors in Mosta. No one should be arrested for making their voices heard,” Grech said.
“Those who protest against the felling of trees get arrested and those who stole millions of euro are still running free, and the police commissioner doesn’t even want to do his duty and investigate them.”
“The police commissioner would do better to wake up from his slumber and do his work on the Court of Appeal’s case. Malta deserves much better.”
Callus was arrested after he tried to knock down a barrier that workers had erected around the ongoing works. He was dragged to the Mosta police station and relesed shortly afterwards.
Grech didn’t comment on whether he agrees with the felling of the trees or not. All Mosta local councillors, from both PL and PN, voted in favour of the removal of the trees as part of the Mosta piazza pedestrianisation project.
