Opposition Leader Bernard Grech has called out Prime Minister Robert Abela for “defending the corrupt and fraudsters”, moments after today’s landmark Vitals-Steward court ruling.

“The court has proven that the Opposition was right from the start when it stressed that the hospital contracts were corrupt.,” Grech said, thanking his predecessor Adrian Delia for having opened the case five years ago.

“Were it not for the Opposition, the people would have kept getting robbed of hundreds of millions of euro. As an Opposition we will now make sure that the government obeys the court’s order and gives the hospitals back to the people.”

“Above all, we must ensure that those who abused, robbed and filled their pockets will face justice.”

“Not only did Abela and his friends keep defending those who fraudulently took over the hospitals but they kept defending the deal, and even called it ‘the real deal’,” he said, a reference to Health Minister Chris Fearne.

“Instead of defending the people, Abela defended the corrupt and fraudsters. Those who don’t fight corruption are corrupt.”

Judge Francesco Depasquale today ordered the annulment of the deal and the return of the three hospitals to the government within the next three months, with all costs to be borne by Steward Malta.

Depasquale ruled there was fraud in three stages of the process – before the original contract with Vitals was signed, during the deal itself and after Steward took over.
