Bernard Grech To Robert Abela: Get Out Of Holiday Mode And Declare A National Emergency

PN leader Bernard Grech has urged the Prime Minister to “get out of holiday mode” and declare a national emergency over the long power outages that have left thousands of Maltese literally and figuratively in the dark and scorching heat.

“All of Malta’s resources must be mobilised to tackle this issue, including the army and police force,” he said during a press conference in Delimara today.

“Abela must get out of his holiday mode to address this issue, and I urge him to declare a national emergency,” he said.

The PN head added that the government’s lines of communication should be directed to address people’s problems with water and electricity, arguing that national buildings not hit by the blackouts should be made available to those left without the basic essentials.

It’s been over a week since Malta was hit with major power outages across several localities, with some residents tackling their sixth day of consecutive outages, including vulnerable people like this nine-month pregnant woman and her family.

Mater Dei Hospital was one of the latest blackout victims last night, suffering a 40-minute power cut yesterday. Today, the Health Ministry confirmed that at least four people have died due to dehydration and hypothermia.

Grech compared Mater Dei’s power outage to Abela’s government’s dubious deals with Vitals Global Healthcare and Steward Healthcare, who were given millions to run three state hospitals. The deals were ruled to be fraudulent.

“Abela has not only invested in our energy sector, but our health sector is suffering too,” he added.

He called for an urgent parliamentary meeting to address the national crisis, by writing a letter to Abela on Friday.
