Bernard Grech’s Former Aide Calls PN A ‘Fan Club’ While Sharing Ostrich Metaphor
Bernard Grech’s former communications director Alessandro Farrugia, who was once one of the PN leader’s closest confidantes, has used a picture of an ostrich digging its head in the sand to describe the current state of the party.
Farrguia spoke out in the wake of the latest miserable survey for PN, with MaltaToday finding Grech is trailing Robert Abela by 24.4 points.
The survey also found that 50.2% of 16-35-year-olds and 49% of 36-50 year-olds don’t intend to vote in the upcoming MEP elections.
“Bit by bit, the mission of politics is decaying and ending and scientific data shows the current political class isn’t inspiring people to see politics as a mission for the common and collective good. On the contrary, they don’t even care anymore,” Farrugia said.
“It is a fact that no country can have a bully in government and a fan club in opposition, but that’s what’s happening in Malta.”
“We aren’t the centre of the world as some think, but neither are we a jungle where everything goes because there isn’t an alternative, meaning there is fertile ground for the status quo to reign.”
Farrugia is currently doing legal practice for former PN MP Jason Azzopardi, who has himself regularly criticised the party.
This isn’t the first time Farrugia has compared PN to a “fan club”.
“Everything is good and perfect within the four walls of a fan club,” Farrugia said last month.
“No matter what anyone else says, your favourite band or sports team is always the best even if they’re struggling, the race of birds you breed is always the best and, in your eyes, everyone else is just wasting their time.”
“In this atmosphere, the fan club’s members regularly meet over a coffee or a beer to agree that their band is the best, that their team is the best, and that their race of bird is the best. They decide to agree on what is relevant for them, even if there are 1,000 other bands or sports teams, and hundreds of other bird races, because they don’t want to look beyond the confines of their four walls, and God forbid anyone ever tells them otherwise.”
“Unfortunately, this what the current PN has become – a fan club.”
