Bird’s Eye Photomontage Shows What New Comino Hotel Will Look Like From Above
A new bird’s eye photomontage has been released by the business group behind a proposed revamp of the Comino Hotel to show what the new building could look like from above.
The image released by HV Hospitality shows the hotel in line with the garigue landscape, complete with a green roof and more trees outside the entrance. The jetty and outdoor pool have been revamped, while the six tennis courts that were part and parcel of the old hotel have been removed to make way for trees and shrubs.
A hotel and adjacent tourist bungalows have stood on Comino for decades courtesy of a concession that was granted in 1960 and which was recently purchased by HV Hospitality – a subsidiary of Hili Ventures – through an €80 million bond issue.
HV Hospitality plans to knock the current structures down and rebuild them from scratch into 71 hotel suites and 19 serviced bungalows.
With the hotel situated on a quiet part of Comino and the concession including rights over the San Niklaw beach, HV Hospitality will be well-positioned to tap into the growing wellness eco-travel market.
However, the project has proven to be controversial given the sensitive nature of Comino and over 13,500 objections have been filed with the Planning Authority. Seven NGOs will tomorrow gather in front of Hili Group’s headquarters in Marsa to protest against the hotel and call for its withdrawal.
One of these NGOs, Friends of the Earth Malta, is proposing a separate project in Comino – the conversion of a small former bakery into an environmental retreat, complete with a vegetable garden and rooms for overnight stays.
