Over 260 families in Birżebbuġa will benefit from a new double glazing window scheme that will allow them to replace their old windows for better protection against surrounding noise pollution.

The €500,000 investment will cover 90% of eligible costs up to a maximum of €2,000 on apertures and will be funded by the Freeport Corporation and managed by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services.

Thus far, over 260 families in Birżebbuġa have applied for the new scheme.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli noted how the new scheme will help control the level of outdoor noise pollution while regulating the temperature of residential buildings.

“The double glazing scheme addresses both the nuisance of noise and the need for greater energy efficiency,” Dalli said.

In addition to the double glazing scheme, a €3 million car park is being constructed in Birżebbuġa, also funded by the Freeport Corporation, and which is expected to commence construction this month.

“We are supporting the comfort of residents with the construction of a carpark that will benefit both residents and tourists,” Schembri said.

The double glazing scheme is part of the Energy Ministry’s ongoing efforts to invest in more efficient energy schemes with plans in the works to encourage businesses and homes to invest in renewable technology.
