Birżebbuġa’s Fort Bengħajsa Will Return To The Public
Prime Minister Robert Abela pledged that Fort Bengħajsa, a British era fortress in Birżebbuġa, will return to the public.
“We built a family park at Bengħajsa that others had viewed as an extension of the Freeport and we will extend it by 7,000 square metres and give you back the fort too,” Abela said.
Built by the British in the early 20th century, Fort Bengħajsa is the southernmost Maltese fortress.
However, it was illegally occupied over the years, with people building homes and garages there and turning the moat into a junkyard.
“It was occupied illegally and we took the necessary action to return it to the people and properly rehabilitate it,” Abela said. “The Lands Authority will ensure that it is enjoyed by the public and that illegalities are removed.”
