Two protests are set to be held at the same time in Valletta tonight, one as part of the global Black Lives Matter movement and the other a demonstration against Malta’s decision to accept hundreds of migrants.

“Black Lives Matter in Malta” is a sit-in which is being held outside Parliament later today to show solidarity with migrants in Malta who face discrimination on a daily basis and to demand justice for Lassana Cisse, whose murderers have yet to be convicted over one year later.

The sit-in is being held at 6pm in conjunction with a number of NGOs and follows suit from “Black Lives Matter” movements in the USA after the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minnesota police officer.

This will mark Malta’s first anti-racism demonstration since the murder of Floyd which has also sparked similar demonstrations, protests and riots in other countries across the world, most of which have rallied under the Black Lives Matter banner.

On the other hand, an anti-migrant counter-protest will be also be held at 5:30pm in Valletta with protests rallying under the “All Lives Matter” movement.

A similar anti-migrant protest was held yesterday in Valletta following Prime Minister Robert Abela’s decision to allow an estimated 425 migrants to enter Malta after spending weeks aboard four tourist boats.

Malta still has to come to terms with its problem of systemic racism with the murder of Lassana Cisse over a year ago – believed to be Malta’s first racially-motivated killing.
