A backup generator is reportedly behind a large plume of black fumes emanating from a Gozo Channel Operators ferry.

Images and video sent to Lovin Malta show thick black smoke emerging from MV Nikolaos’ funnel while docked in Mgarr harbour on 16th October.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, Chairman Joe Cordina said that he was informed by the captain of the vessel that it was because they started a backup generator which had not been used for a long time.

Still, many raised concerns over the fumes that descended on the area.

Lovin Malta has also reached out to the Environment Resources Authority for comment, but it did not reply by the time of publication.
