The traditional ceremony of the blessing of fishing boats occurred just off Marsaxlokk’s pjazza as fishermen and onlookers gathered.

During the ceremony, which was attended by Minister for Fishing Anton Refalo and led by Marsaxlokk Archpriest Dun Luke Seguna, saw traditional luzzu and other fishing ships blessed in hopes of having a good fishing season.

The traditional and cultural ceremony went down as the lampuki season opens.

15,000 palm leaves were donated by the government to lampuki fishermen.

There are at least 122 registered lampuki fishermen in Malta and Gozo. They’ll be allowed to throw their trellis in the sea until the end of the week, where they will retrieve it for the first catch of the year.

The season officially opens on the August 15th, and will continue until the end of the year.
