Blow For Gozo Tunnel Plans As Gozitan Workers In Malta Question Whether It Is Even Needed

An association representing Gozitan employees who work in Malta has questioned the usefulness of the proposed Malta-Gozo tunnel, arguing that the introduction of a fourth ferry has drastically improved the situation for Gozitan commuters.

“The [fourth ferry] has helped to reduce significantly the ‘waiting time’ to and from Malta,” the Association of Gozitan Employees in Malta said. “Given the success experienced in the last months, we question the usefulness of the proposed tunnel project between Malta and Gozo. Hence, we are asking the relevant authorities to publish all studies (once ready) related to the construction of the tunnel to ease scrutiny.”

“Furthermore, we believe that these studies should not only focus on the environmental and financial viability of the project but also take into consideration the impact of having the fourth ferry operating on a full-time basis.”

The Gozo Tourism Association has also said the success of the fourth ferry has cast doubt over the necessity of a tunnel.

However, Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg has said Infrastructure Malta’s tunnel plans haven’t changed as a result of the ferry’s success. Indeed, initial tenders for the construction and operation of the Gozo tunnel will be published later this year as promised.
