Blue Lagoon Swimming Zone Gets Bigger And Safer Ahead Of Summer

Just in time for the summer season, Team Blue Lagoon has expanded the designated swimming zone at one of Malta’s most iconic spots, giving swimmers more space and better safety measures in the crystal-clear waters of Comino.
The update includes a 12% increase in the central swimming area, along with the addition of two inlets to the left of the jetty, which are now also reserved exclusively for swimmers.
Previously, these areas were accessible to smaller boats and jet skis, raising safety concerns.
This expansion is part of a wider sustainability and visitor management project led by Team Blue Lagoon, aimed at preserving the site’s delicate Natura 2000 ecosystem while enhancing the overall experience for those who visit.
Other key changes include:
- Better maritime traffic management and designated berthing areas
- Improved waste and litter collection, with more staff and patrols on site
- New public facilities, including sanitation upgrades
- Launch of the Book. Protect. System, a free online booking platform to limit overcrowding
The new system, available at bluelagooncomino.mt, caps the number of visitors at 4,000 at any one time. Last summer, up to 12,000 people were recorded at once during peak hours, a number that raised serious environmental and safety concerns.
The Malta Tourism Authority is backing the ongoing efforts to protect the Blue Lagoon for the long term, as part of a strategy to ensure both sustainability and a higher-quality visitor experience.
