‘Bobby’s Been Shot’: Close-Range Shotgun Attack Shocks Malta’s Animal Welfare Community

Malta’s animal community has been left stunned and deeply disturbed by the distressing case of Bobby, a Pharaoh Hound/Fox Terrier mix, who was discovered to have sustained severe injuries from a close-range shotgun.

Bobby’s ordeal began when he was found injured and suffering, initially believed to be the result of a road accident or a dog attack.

However, subsequent examination, including X-rays, revealed a more horrifying truth: Bobby had been shot with lead pellets, indicating a deliberate act of cruelty.

According to Rosalind Agius, the sanctuary manager at AAA, Bobby’s injuries were concentrated on his head, neck, and back, suggesting that he was shot at point-blank range.

The discovery of the lead pellets shattered any hopes of a simple recovery for Bobby, as removing them surgically would pose a grave risk to his internal organs, leaving him susceptible to lead poisoning in the long term.

A jogger initially discovered Bobby in a field close to the sanctuary in Birżebbuġa and reported the incident to AWS. However, when the jogger returned the next day, Bobby was still there, underscoring gaps in the system’s responsiveness and enforcement.

Unfortunately, Bobby’s case is not an isolated incident in Malta. Agius revealed that the AAA encounters similar cases of dogs being shot on a monthly basis, highlighting a distressing trend of animal cruelty that continues to persist. She emphasised the urgent need for stronger action from authorities to address these issues and enforce existing regulations, including the mandatory microchipping and registration of pets.

The heartbreaking ordeal of Bobby has reignited discussions surrounding animal welfare in Malta, prompting calls for increased awareness and education about responsible pet ownership. Agius lamented the prevailing mentality that seems to prioritise outdated practices over the well-being of animals, urging for a collective effort to foster a more compassionate society.

In response to Bobby’s plight, the AAA remains committed to providing him with the best possible care and support during his recovery journey. The outpouring of concern and support from the community reflects a shared determination to advocate for the welfare and protection of animals like Bobby, whose resilience serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring need for compassion and advocacy in Malta’s society.
