‘Book Well In Advance’: New Blue Lagoon Entry Rules And FAQs Released

Locals and tourists alike need to register if they plan to visit the famous Blue Lagoon this summer, with new rules imposing a 4,000 visitor cap at any given moment.

After the courts rejected a request by ferry operators to scrap these restrictions, the scheme is good to go.

A new website has been launched from which people can book three time slots: 8:30-1pm, 1:30pm to 5:30pm, and 5:30pm-10pm. It is free of charge.

The Malta Tourism Authority has also published some FAQs about this scheme.

How will it work?

If you are approved, a QR code will be sent to your phone, which you will need to show to officials prior to disembarkation. You will then be given a wristband that you will have to return prior to departure.

Booking cannot be modified but you can pass on your QR code to another person so long as it hasn’t already been scanned. You can book for up to four people on one reservation.

Can you book on the same day?

It is technically possible but it depends on availability. With the Blue Lagoon welcoming up to 12,000 people in a single day last summer, the MTA is advising people to book “well in advance”.

Will Blue Lagoon be physically fenced off?

No, it won’t, but gatekeepers will patrol the area and control access to ensure people without a QR code don’t enter from other parts of Comino.

What if you arrive early or late?

If you arrive early, you may be asked to wait until the start of your time slot. If you arrive late, you will be given access for the remaining time in your booked a lot.

Do you need a QR code if you visit on a private or tour boat?

You won’t need a QR code if you intend to remain on the boat and swim in the bay, but you will need one if you step on land.

Do you agree with this scheme?
