Days After Bottle Scheme Launch, Sliema Machine Left Surrounded By Trash
Just mere days after the BCRS reverse vending machines were launched around the Maltese islands, one of the machines found in Sliema has been left littered with heaps of trash.
The photo was uploaded by Nicky Pillow, who simply questioned why such a fresh initiative was already facing the carelessness of littering.
Featuring Sliema’s Balluta Bay machine, the photograph shows a number of plastic and glass bottles as well as boxes littered next to the machine.
The trash was presumably left by someone who either found the machine full or else realised at the last minute that glass bottles holding spirits will not be accepted by the machine.
As it stands, not every type of bottle found in Malta will be accepted by the machine – however, this is no excuse to leave the bottles behind on a public pavement.
Not even a week after they were launched, some of the machines have already reportedly been found out of order.
Many have also lamented the inefficiency of the system after the machine showed up as online and failed to mark that it was full on the website.
The new reverse vending machine initiative gives consumers to chance to get 10 cents back for returning their empty bottles.
The machine accepts several types of plastic, metal, and glass bottles, including still, sparkling and flavoured water, soft drinks, beers, ciders, and dilutables. Wines, spirits, juices, and milk cartons won’t be accepted.
