Bank of Valletta has issued a warning urging customers to be wary of scam calls originating from a BOV phone number – 2131 2020.

“The callers are using a technique called spoofing to disguise fraudulent communication as coming from a trusted source,” said BOV.

“Victims are being told that ‘suspicious transactions’ have been noted on their cards or their accounts.”

If somebody calls you from this number or asks you for sensitive financial information such as bank account numbers, passwords, card details, or authorisation for financial transactions – do not agree to do so.

“BOV employees will never ask for account or card numbers in full, card CVV details, card PINS, internet or mobile banking passwords, codes, signatures, one-time passwords, or multi-factor authentication.”

Legitimate financial transactions between customers and BOV will never be conducted over the phone – so the bank has warned customers never to engage with scammers or anyone they believe could be a scammer.

“Be vigilant and cautious at all times. When in doubt, contact the Bank immediately by calling 2131 2020 will direct them to the legitimate BOV Customer Service Centre, where they can verify any calls that they have received.”
