An 11-year-old English boy has unfortunately passed away after finding himself in difficulty while swimming in the waters of Ramla l-Ħamra, Gozo.

The boy was swimming with a 37-year-old man – also from the UK – when they both found themselves in difficulty.

Police were informed of the incident at 1.15pm and immediately went on site. Members of the Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department were soon called for assistance and began an intensive search, both by dinghi and helicopter.

The boy was first rescued and taken to the Gozo General Hospital. Unfortunately, he was certified dead soon after. Meanwhile, the search for the older man is ongoing.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened by Magistrate Jean Paul Grech.

Lovin Malta extends its sincere condolences to the family of the young boy.
