BREAKING: PN Backtrack – Jean Pierre Debono Tells Party He Will Not Accept Co-Opted Seat

Jean Pierre Debono has officially told the Nationalist Party that he will not accept the vacated parliamentary seat of David Stellini, despite having declared his interest in the spot as soon as it was made available.

Debono, a Delia-loyalist, was narrowly elected in a secret vote within the PN’s Executive Committee, beating out Gozitan Kevin Cutajar by 42 votes to 40.

The co-option has since been postponed, after several party figures, including the former president of the Executive Committee Mark Anthony Sammut, pointed out serious issues in the voting procedure, namely that David Stellini and PN Treasurer David Camilleri were not allowed to submit their ballot.

At the time, Debono said:

“Sammut asked me for the list before the meeting started and I told him I had nothing to do with the list and the preparation of this election since I was directly involved in it. Sammut knows he did not get this list from me and that I did not compile the list, so it had to be him to see that the list was correct, updated and according to the Statute. Sammut called the names for the election one by one to vote. Sammut knows this, and what I am saying is nothing but the truth.”
