Brothers Who Murdered Daphne Caruana Galizia Convicted Of Money Laundering
George and Alfred Degiorgio, the brothers who have been convicted of the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, have been found guilty of money laundering.
Magistrate Joe Mifsud sentenced each Degiorgio to four years imprisonment and a €25,000 fine, MaltaToday reported from court. The prison sentence will have to be served over and above the 40-year sentence they are already serving for the assassination of Caruana Galizia.
The Degiorgios were charged with money laundering following an investigation into their assets after they were prosecuted for Caruana Galizia’s murder.
Although they were both legally unemployed and had received social benefits, they owned several luxury items, including two boats, a Mercedes, an Audi and a Corvette.
George Degiorgio had also held bank accounts with major banks and paid his two children’s private school fees.
In his judgement, Mifsud noted that the Degiorgios had failed to explain the provenance of their wealth, with money laundering legislation placing the burden of proof onto the accused.
However, he acquitted George Degiorgo’s ex-wife Anca Adelina Pop of the same charges given that she had presented clear proof of her wealth, including a €35,000 settlement from her ex-husband, alimony payments and financial assistance from her father.
