Malta is officially one of Europe’s most digitally skilled nations, boasting a 96% digital proficiency rate, well above the EU average.

The figure, published in June’s European Commission Digital Decade Report, highlights Malta’s steady progress toward becoming a future-ready, innovation-driven country where digital skills are part of everyday life.

At a press conference launching this year’s EU Code Week, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said the milestone reflects Malta’s commitment to building a more connected, digitally confident society.

“Malta achieved a 96% level of digital proficiency — far above the European average,” Schembri said. “It shows that our collective effort to prepare for the future is paying off.”

As part of this national push, the government unveiled two new initiatives designed to make coding more accessible to everyone, from students to adults looking to up-skill:

Boost Your Coding Scheme

Backed by a €400,000 investment, this programme offers €1,000 in financial support for anyone aged 16 and over to attend basic coding courses.

Minecraft Education Challenge Malta

A nationwide competition inviting primary and secondary school students to learn coding through Minecraft Education, working collaboratively to build and create digital projects.

Minister Schembri thanked the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) for leading the initiative, alongside Microsoft and Gaming Malta, who are supporting the rollout.

MDIA CEO Kenneth Brincat said the Authority’s focus is on helping Malta stay ahead in the digital race.
“As an authority looking ahead, we aim to foster digital skills, create quality tech careers, and make sure our education system is future-ready,” he said.

With EU Code Week 2025 officially underway, Malta’s 96% digital proficiency isn’t just a statistic — it’s proof that the island is coding its way towards a smarter, stronger and more connected future.
