Restaurants and catering establishments were negatively impacted by the Gozo Channel delays caused by weather conditions during the Christmas period, according to the Association for Catering Establishments (ACE).

The association reported a significant number of dining cancellations due to the transportation delays which negatively impacted restaurant sales.

Impacted days include Boxing Day where traffic queues were reported from Mellieha bay all the way to Ċirkewwa.

According to the ACE, “Several catering establishments in Gozo have reported a significant number of dining cancellations caused by Gozo Channel’s transportation delays on specific days including Boxing Day where traffic queues were reported from Mellieħa bay all the way to Cirkewwa.”

“Gozo Channel’s operational decisions must be reconsidered in the interest of the Gozitan business community, especially in the catering sector. Such reconsiderations are also required, keeping in mind recent figures which show the constant increase in passengers during this period,” the association continued, citing a 104,000 passenger increase on the Gozo Channel between 18th December 2023 and 8th January 2024.
