Watch: €100,000 For AI-Powered Heated Smart Gloves On Shark Tank Malta

Comfort Life – a company seeking to build heated gloves primarily targeting people suffering from Raynaud’s disease – was the third company to receive funding through season two of Shark Tank Malta.

Ukrainian CEO and founder Alexey Gayduk was looking for €100,000 in exchange for 8% of his company, but walked away with the same sum for 20% – along with the expertise of Alex Fenech, Browns Pharmacy’s CEO.

Raynaud’s disease is a condition affecting “around 75 million of people” according to Alexei – who estimated that this demographic alone represents “a market evaluation of around €15 billion.”

The disease causes sensitive blood vessels, particularly in the extremities, to overreact to cold temperatures and become narrower than usual.

This restricts blood flow – which can be painful for anybody – but in the words of Comfort Life’s CEO, “people who suffer from Raynaud disease feel the same but 10 times worse, especially with type 2 of this disease.”

The gloves designed by Comfort Life are currently in prototype stage. They are heated smart-gloves with a three to four hour battery life.

When they are ready for the market, they should have AI-powered software capable of predicting and pre-empting Raynaud attacks by gently heating the fingers and preventing the onset of significant pain.

“We are going to have an algorithm which predicts Raynaud attacks, and though the market already has different competitors, nobody provides a smart solution which can predict Raynaud attacks and keep their hands warm and don’t hinder the movement.”

It should be mentioned that though Alexey’s pitch was interesting to all of the sharks, the software component relies entirely on unproven technology which has yet to be developed. Additionally, the hardware component – the gloves – have yet to be finalised in design.

Despite the potential size of the medical market, Comfort Life does not intend to limit its marketing to those with Raynaud’s, but will also be aiming to sell towards people who regularly get cold fingers whilst working at a computer.

“I don’t have this disease but I suffer from this problem when I work at the computer and my hands get very cold, right now I need to turn on an AC and it heats the whole room, but this is a more targeted solution,” he told the sharks.

The Ukrainian CEO explained that the war in his home nation had been disruptive to his fledgling business, stating “I wanted to file for a patent, but unfortunately I had to stop these activities for a year – for obvious reasons.”

All of the sharks were interested, but it was Fenech who came forwards with an offer. With his background in Malta’s healthcare industry, he countered Alexey’s bid by asking for 20% of the business. He added that he could offer “knowledge and experience after 25 years of screwing up. I learned a lot of lessons, so I believe I can add value to your business that way.”

Alexey’s initial reaction was to clap back at his potential investor, asking “why for 20%? We’re speaking about a market of billions of dollars.”

Fenech responded, “I’m not flexible on my offer. This is a bit of a gamble for me.”

He cited that the hardware had yet to be fully developed, and that though he believed in the idea and was excited by the potential earnings from a global market, the business’s success could not be considered a certainty.

Alexey weighed this response for a moment before smiling, holding out his hand and telling Fenech “in this case here is my heated glove.”

Fenech is the third shark this season to invest in a company. As Alexey left the tank, the sharks thanked him for his pitch before adding an encouraging “and go Ukraine!”
