Transport Malta (TM) has taken strong action against the cab driver who went viral for allowing passengers to climb in the back of his vehicle, suspending his driver tag.

This comes after PN MP Adrian Delia shared the footage of the cab driver boarding his passengers in the trunk, slamming the reckless behaviour from the driver.

“How long have I been begging to find out how many Y-plates are being given out haphazardly?” Delia had asked.

“TM strongly condemns the violations committed by irresponsible drivers on our roads. A video released showing a driver allowing passengers to climb in the back of the vehicle has raised serious public safety concerns,” TM said in a statement.

“These flagrant violations of passenger safety measures and disregard for traffic laws are appalling and unacceptable.”

TM continued to stress that such activities endanger the lives of passengers and undermine the integrity of the public transport system.

The Authority’s Enforcement Unit conducted an extensive search to identify the driver and the driver tag was suspended. This case will now be brought forward by the Malta Police Force, where charges will be issued in the coming days.

TM continued to stress how passenger safety and well-being are of utmost importance to the authority. It “actively promotes and enforces strict safety standards for all modes of transport within Malta including light passenger transport vehicles and private hire cars”.

However, it stressed that to provide a safe and reliable transport system, it is essential that all drivers follow established guidelines and rules.

“TM encourages the public to report any illegal behaviour or unsafe behaviour by drivers. The public plays a vital role in helping authorities promptly report such incidents and identify those who undermine passenger safety and take appropriate action.”
