Caged Birds Left Under ‘Filthy, Overcrowded’ Conditions Remain Outside In Iklin Despite Reports
An Iklin resident has raised the alarm after reporting a case of potential abuse on the streets of their hometown, though little has been done following the reports.
“I’ve reported the case to Animal Welfare, and AW officers were seen on site twice, once on the 3rd August, and once again on 4th August, and still the birds are in the same position – in the sun, in filth and in overcrowded conditions,” the resident told Lovin Malta under condition of anonymity.
Though officers appeared on site repeatedly, the birds remain there. In images from the area, multiple chickens can be seen in one cage, as a number of other cages are left amid debris and other trash and materials.

They are all in a driveway of a home on a main road within Iklin.
The resident wondered if the person who owns the home may be someone who is being protected for some reason, wondering why no action was being taken. She appealed for authorities to “stop the torture”.
An informed source intimate with this case told Lovin Malta that “it could be the case that since the owner of the birds is a well-known medical professional and his brother is also in a high position within the Department of Health they are receiving preferential treatment since the Director of Animal Welfare was a Director in the Department of Health in her previous role”.
They also questioned why there were repeat visits and the opportunity to remedy the situation for days, yet nothing had been done yet.
An Animal Rights Ministry spokesperson confirmed with Lovin Malta that Animal Welfare had inspected the site, and will be carrying out a follow up inspection within 24 hours.
