‘Call Us If She Dies’: After Cat Run Over In Marsa, Rescuer Told Ambulance Isn’t Coming
Sarah* was out for a drive when she saw a struggling cat that had been run over by a car in Marsa – and found herself at a loss when she was given very little help from the concerned authorities.
“The cat was having trouble breathing and was making strange sounds. A resident asked me for some water for it, and then we called Animal Welfare on 1717,” the woman told Lovin Malta.
Contacting Animal Welfare via their direct line, she hoped that an ambulance or medical team could be sent to treat the cat, and maybe save it. But what she was told left her confused.
“I was told that the animal ambulances were unavailable, and should the cat die, she told me to call her back so the ambulance won’t come.”
Sarah didn’t leave the cat’s side, and, unfortunately, around 30 minutes later, the cat had a seizure and died, she recounted.
After the experience, she’s been left wondering how it’s possible that animal ambulances aren’t available when they are needed – and when they may be able to make the difference in saving a life.
“It’s a shame that there are not enough animal ambulances for these kinds of incidents, considering it was at 11.15pm when I called. Big shame,” she told Lovin Malta. “I just wanted to share this story to raise awareness regarding animal rescue as this cat might have been saved if an ambulance arrived on time, considering the town of the accident was very central in this case.”
