Watch out for bad drivers on the road and stray bullets in natural environments if you plan on travelling to Malta, the Canadian government has warned on its official website.

Though the Canadian government gave Malta a passing grade when it comes to things like transportation and crime on the island, it issues a number of warning in key areas.

Here is what Canada has to say about Malta’s roads and drivers.

“Traffic drives on the left. Narrow, winding, congested and sometimes poorly maintained roads may pose hazards. Drivers do not respect traffic laws and do not follow safe driving practices.”

And this is what it had to say regards the hunting season.

“Specific dates for the hunting season are determined by the government in the lead-up to the season. It generally runs from the spring until the fall. Hunting areas, which are rarely marked, often overlap with camping areas. Be vigilant if you visit a rural area during hunting season, as accidents involving stray bullets have occurred.”

The advice was last updated on 8th August.

The North American country, widely considered to be one of the leading democratic countries, also warned of Maltese waters, saying: “Coastal waters can be dangerous. Riptides are common.”

Driving on Malta’s roads can often feel like rolling the dice, with daily accidents hitting the news on the regular.

Over the last few months, Malta has recorded a significant increase in road traffic accidents, up by 18% when compared to the same period in 2021.

Road traffic casualties increased by 8.9% to 455 when compared to the same period in 2021. Grievously injured persons amounted to 98 and consisted of 67 drivers, 13 passengers and 18 pedestrians, cyclists, or others.

Do you think this is a fair and appropriate warning for travellers coming to Malta to holiday?
