Caritas Director Calls For Ban On Synthetic Cannabis Products
While addressing a graduation ceremony for substance abusers, Caritas Director Anthony Gatt condemned and raised concern over the consumption and selling of synthetic cannabis products.
Gatt, with the help of some University of Malta researchers and help from the OASI Foundation, has been spearheading and pushing for a total ban on the sale of HHC products being sold in average corner shops on the island.
He also stressed the extent to which the chemicals present in these products are unregulated, yet they are still very easily purchasable via online ordering services such as Wolt and Bolt or through certain shops on the island.
This comes after headline news revealed a study showing that the so-called “MDMA gummies” contained traces of the novel synthetic hallucinogen 2-Fluorodeschloroketamine.
“The ease of obtaining such products makes this situation even more worrying,” the university team behind the study issued in a public warning.
They later went on to stress and reveal their findings after a thorough laboratory examination, which showed that there were traces of amphetamines and ketamine in one of the packets of “MDMA Gummies.”
“This is a moment where we are truly seeing darkness,” he added. “We believe if there is a solution, it is a will for true enforcement.”
