Cassola Proposes €20 Parking Charge In Hotspots After Public Transport Reform
Independent politician Arnold Cassola proposed that Malta should establish a €20 fee to park in hot zones like Sliema and Valletta after improving its public transport system.
Cassola spoke out at a recent Property Malta conference, and Neville Gafa’ said he proposed a €20 public parking fee across the board as a measure to reduce traffic.
However, Cassola told Lovin Malta that his proposal was more detailed than that.
“What I said is that the only way to reduce traffic in Malta is to reduce cars from using the roads,” he said. “No road widening or flyovers are going to reduce the number of cars. On the contrary, these measures will only encourage more car use.”
“The only way to encourage people not to use their private cars is to ensure a fully functioning, efficient, frequent and punctual 24 hour bus service that reaches all Malta and Gozo any time of the day. And, of course, such service should continue being free.”
“AFTER such a service has been set up and is fully functioning, and therefore when all commuters can reach their destinations comfortably, and without any hassle, and without having to fork out any payment, ONLY THEN would I introduce a €20 parking fee in very hot zones like Sliema and Valletta for those who prefer to use their private car instead of the free efficient public service.”
