Michelle Fairley, best known for playing Catelyn Stark in the series Game of Thrones, will voice Daphne Caruana Galizia in a new BBC podcast about the life of the assassinated Maltese journalist.

‘Daphne, A Fire In Malta’ is a five-part docudrama and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 this week, with the first episode scheduled for tomorrow at 10:45am.

The podcast synopsis describes Caruana Galizia as one of Malta’s top investigative journalists, who dedicated her life to holding power to account and investigating allegations of organises crime, cronyism and corruption.

“Daphne was often described as fearless. Her provocative, uncompromising style made her work both controversial – and high risk,” the synopsis states. “But what compelled Daphne to take on these influential forces? Across the series, we explore five episodes from Daphne’s life and investigative work. In telling her story, there is much we cannot know and so some we have imagined.”

“Like Daphne, we draw on various sources – and sometimes conflicting accounts – in an attempt to piece together a picture of what might have happened behind the headlines.”

The show is written by Lizzie Nunnery and Alys Harte and directed by Sasha Yevtushenko. Joining Fairley on the cast is Paul Hickey, who will be playing Caruana Galizia’s widower Peter and Jonny Holden, who will be playing her son Matthew.

Ahead of the broadcast, Matthew Caruana Galizia gave an interview to The Guardian, in which he recounted how it was like growing up in the household of one of the most controversial figures in the country.

“I remember going to school the day after the front door of our house was set on fire, and the teacher in my class saying ‘your mother should not have written these things’,” he said. “The problem was not my mother. It’s like blaming a woman who walks down the street wearing a skirt for her own rape. It’s just another kind of victim-blaming.”
