Chainsaw Strikes Again: 300 Trees Near Addolorata Cemetery ‘To Give Way For Underground Tunnels’
Around 300 trees are reportedly facing the axe near the Addolorata Cemetery as part of a project to construct two underground tunnels and alleviate traffic at the nearby roundabout.
A video of trees getting chopped down in the area went viral on social media in recent days, with many people decrying the attitude displayed by the authorities to nature.

The Times of Malta reported today that this is only the beginning and that around 300 trees will be chopped down as part of the project, while a further 250 will be transplanted. Around 7,000 square metres of agricultural land will also be lost.
Infrastructure Malta was awarded a development permit to construct the tunnels last September, as part of the major Marsa junction project which is intended to alleviate traffic congestion in one of the island’s hotspots.
This follows in the wake of the contentious Central Link project, in which hundreds of trees face the axe.
