Chamber Of Commerce Calls For Independent Audit Into Surplus Public Sector Jobs

The Chamber of Commerce has called for an independent audit of the public sector to identify any excess jobs whose human resources can be channeled into the private sector.

In its pre-budget document, the Chamber warned that the government is “actively poaching” human resources from the private sector, leading to a costly overstaffing problem in various government agencies and organisations.

“A comprehensive review of job roles and responsibilities within all government ministries, entities and departments can easily generate savings,” they said.

“In areas of identified duplication, government should streamline processes and eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic layers to improve efficiency and reduce costs.”

The Chamber also called for a revisiting of half-day schedules for public sector departments, warning they are inconvenient for business and for government to “actively disincentivise” people who work in the private sector from moving to the public sector because this constitutes “unethical competition”.
