Charges Against Mother Of MP Alex Borg Over Safety Failures At Gozitan Courts Dropped
Potential charges against the mother of a PN MP have been dropped – with the MP in question taking to social media to celebrate the development in his family’s now-dropped case.
“The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has dropped the case they opened against my mother in her personal capacity – the truth always emerges in the end!” Alex Borg said, sharing a smiling image of himself and his mother.
“How important it is that we don’t rush in decisions that could cause harm, just so we can say we tried to make some noise..” he continued. “Thank you to all those who called us over the last few week, who spoke to us and lifted us up!”
He also thanked lawyers Adrian Delia and Steve Tonna Lowell for their assistance.
Police had planned to file charges against Mary Debono Borg over failing to ensure minimum health and safety standards at the Gozo courts, where she works as director-general. She was set to be charged alongside Court Services Agency CEO Eunice Maria Grech Fiorini.
The now-dropped charges against Debono Borg and Grech Fiorini came following an audit into the Gozo court by the OHSA, which flagged multiple shortcomings.
The OHSA had said the two public officers failed to ensure that health and safety standards are upheld at the court and neglected to carry out a proper health and safety assessment or a proper fire and evacuation plan. Moreover, they didn’t install proper signage at the Gozo courthouse.
However, the PN warned that Debono Borg and Grech Fiorini are being made to carry the can for the government’s failure to invest in the Gozitan courts over the last nine years.
