Children’s Rights Ministry Not Aware Of Child Marriages In Malta, Encourages People To Come Forward
The Children’s Rights Ministry has stated that it is not aware of any child marriages occurring in Malta.
“The Ministry has not received any reports of the sort,” a spokesperson for the Ministry for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity told Lovin Malta.
“We encourage the person who spoke with your portal to step up and report the alleged abuse so the Child Protection Department can investigate accordingly.”
This comes after Maltese-Palestinian author Walid Nabhan claimed that child marriages and teenage births are happening in Malta – some on his very street in Ħamrun.
Then others began opening up, with one local resident sharing how they were once invited to a child marriage in Malta.
“Once I was invited to a wedding, I didn’t even know she was underage… and when I found out I left immediately. And this isn’t my experience only,” they confessed.
Some have claimed that the authorities are well aware of the situation, but not enough is being done to curb the issue.
What do you make of the Ministry’s statement on the matter?
