A woman has been rescued this morning after a block of apartments collapsed in Main Street, Mellieħa while she was inside.

According to ONE News, the woman was inside the bedroom, one of the only parts of the building which didn’t collapse, when the tragic incident occurred at around 6am.

She was trapped in the broken building until Civil Protection Department officials and medics arrived on site to rescue her and escort her to hospital.

It is unknown what caused the building to collapse at this stage, but questions will undoubtedly be asked of the construction site which is located right next to it. The incident comes two months after a block of apartments in Gwardamangia collapsed as a result of the construction that was being carried out next door.
