The Colombian community in Malta is grieving after one of their own was left brain dead just days after an incident while on a night out.

“I can not believe it… today we lost Sandra Zamudio,” a friend of hers posted today. “I am without words… You will be missed sunshine. Goodbye, my dear one. May we meet again in heaven.”

The tribute comes along the tragic news that Sandra, known as Sami to her friends, was left brain dead and is set to have the plug pulled on the machines keeping her alive following an incident during a night out last Saturday.

Sami is being remembered as an “amazing person with a heart of gold and a positive attitude in everything”.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, police were able to confirm that an incident occurred on Saturday night, and that they are investigating the case.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to repatriate her body, explaining what led to her untimely death.

“On Saturday, 2nd July, our beautiful Sami decided to go for a night out with her beloved husband to a local bar in Malta, where they have been living for the last year. Unfortunately, she became a target and the victim of drink spiking at the hands of some evil strangers.” (This claim has been denied by well-informed sources, read below for more)

“Sami was rushed to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with brain death with her life depending on an artificial life support machine.”

“We are devastated; there are no words; life will never be the same again without her. Sami was passionate about life; she was a loving daughter, sister, wife, aunt, friend and full of life. Sami and her husband moved from their home country, Colombia, far away from their loved ones, looking for a better future.”

“Unfortunately, her family had to make the heartbreaking decision to unplug her from the life support machine and donate her organs just as how Sami would have wanted to, saving other people’s life.”

A GoFundMe page is aiming to raise $15,000 for the repatriation of her body, with Sami’s mother Claribel Torres taking to social media to please for help.

“Friends and family, I need your help to repatriate my daughter’s body to Colombia, this is very painful for me. I really appreciate your cooperation. God bless you always, I’m sharing the fundraiser link, please share,” she said.

Though the GoFundMe page attributes the incident to a drink spiking event, Lovin Malta is informed that the incident may have involved another substance, though investigations will be able to confirm that at a later date.

The incident has shocked her friends and family, as Sami was in perfectly good health just days ago. However, following Saturday evening, she was hospitalised, certified brain dead.

Lovin Malta sends its condolences to the family and community during this challenging time
