A company director has been accused of fabricating a claim that a cab driver took a detour during their journey and sexually assaulted.

The court heard how the woman had booked a Bolt ride to take her home from St Paul’s Bay at 3.09am – which is when the driver took a detour and raped her near a caravan site, according to the woman.

The driver did not deny that they had engaged in sexual activities – but claimed that it was consensual.

Times of Malta reported that the court insisted the 45-year-old’s name be withheld from public knowledge to protect her son, who is a minor.

The court established that the vehicle trip records showed that the detour taken by the driver was different to that alleged by the woman.

The woman has been charged with reporting the driver for a crime she knew he did not commit, taking a false oath and fabricating evidence.

She is pleading not guilty to these counter-allegation.

Bail has been denied in light of the “serious nature of the offences” – and the fact that civilians have yet to testify.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech presided over the case. Inspector Joseph Busuttil prosecuted while lawyer Jason Grima was counsel for the defence.
