Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba has echoed calls being made for Malta’s citizens to be offered monetary compensation for the electrical shortages which have taken the island by storm.

This comes as Labour heavyweight Jason Micallef as well as the Nationalist Party and many other entities have called for monetary compensation to be offered to citizens experiencing prolonged blackouts.

“I understand the pressure on the electricity distribution system is an exceptional situation due to excessive heat currently happening,” Agius Saliba started off.

“I also understand that it has become evident that much investment is needed to strengthen our electricity distribution in the country. It is pathetic that some try to gain political capital from such a problem.

“However, at the same time, I cannot comprehend how consumers are left without any form of compensation when they experience prolonged power cuts.”

“Just as compensation is given by Enemalta for damages that occur to appliances, the same compensation should be provided to consumers in cases where electricity supply remains interrupted for more than 24 hours or in cases of repeated and consecutive power cuts for several days.”

As Malta enters day five of power cuts, Enemalta has admitted that it cannot assure this problem to be resolved any time soon.

Businesses, vulnerable people, and animals are all struggling. A lot of food has been thrown away, and some residents have actually spent their night sleeping on the balcony to try get some rest amid the sweltering heat.

Some localities have reported experiencing power cuts for as long as 24 hours, with parts of some localities like Żurrieq having been left in total blackout for days.

Meanwhile, the heatwave is expected to last at least another week, with temperatures getting worse next Monday.
